Our Founders

The Greek Community of Oshawa and District

Anastasios (Tom) Sakellarakos

Theodore (Ted) Tsagrinos

Cleanthes (Chrys) Chrysostamou

Vasillis (Bill) Makris

Approximately 40 years ago . . . a handful of Greek families that settled in the Durham Region had a vision. That vision was to preserve their Hellenic heritage in their newly adopted country . . . CANADA. Thomas Sakellarakos, Ted Tsagrinos, Cleanthes Chrysostamou and Bill Makris are the four legends who pooled their resources and talents to establish what is known today as the Greek Community of Oshawa & District. Three are deceased and Bill Makris remains as the only living founder. Their determination to preserve their culture was ingrained in each and every person that they encountered. They gathered Greek families, arranged weekly meetings alternating from house to house in order to reinforce their Greek culture and beliefs. They even took turns driving to Kingston to pay out of their own pockets to bring a Greek priest to say mass here, for the community.

Tireless fundraising efforts (including Fiesta) and many volunteers have contributed to the ultimate dream of one day building a community centre that would represent a meeting place for Greeks within the entire region. The aim has always been to unify Greeks both young & old. The vision of our founders has grown to the point where, as a group, we are now financially capable of starting the process of erecting this dream facility. An active committee is on a mission to fully develop the 13.5 acre parcel of land.
