The Greek Community of Oshawa and District

The Greek Community of Oshawa & District Greek School program is offered in cooperation with the Durham District School Board & various ethnic groups, parent associations & language schools.

 

LEVEL 1

Level 1 sets a strong foundation and is the key to success in later years. We will bee using phonics to build a foundation for conversation, reading and writing.
Ages 4 to 6

Learning Outcomes:

  • Listen to basic Greek words and
  • Repeat them and explain
  • Expand vocabulary through themes:
    • Colors, animals, simple greetings, days of week, seasons, flowers,, simple body parts, shapes, numbers 0-20,
  • identify sounds of letter and recognize letters of
  • Trace and copy letters of
  • Story
  • Cultural history: OXI DAY, Christmas,,MARCH 25, Easter, Name Days
  • Dance

LEVEL 2 – 9

Beyond Level 1, students are divided by age and proficiency.

Learning Outcomes:

LEVEL 2

  • Follow instructions in Greek.
  • Respond in simple sentences in Greek
  • Expand vocabulary through themes (days of week, seasons, I like/I don’t like, food, colors, family, school, body parts, clothing, shapes, count to 100).
  • Recognize upper and lower case letters.
  • Begin reading words, sentences.
  • Practice writing letters.
  • Learn alphabet.
  • Learn vowels and consonants.
  • Cultural History (Name Days, OXI Day, Christmas, March 25, Easter).
  • Dance.
  • Song.

LEVEL 3

  • Interact with teacher in Greek.
  • Cultural and seasonal theme discussions.
  • Expand vocabulary through themes.
  • Role Play and dramatization.
  • Learn consonant and vowel digraph (Άι, οι, οu, etc.).
  • Read stories from books.
  • Practice writing letters and sentences.
  • Learn alphabet by heart.
  • Distinguish between vowels and consonants.
  • Articles Ο, Η, Το.
  • Νοbs singular and plural.
  • Cultural History.
  • Dance.
  • Song.

LEVEL 4

  • Carry on simple conversation.
  • Follow instructions in Greek.
  • Give instructions in Greek.
  • Expand vocabulary.
  • Learn consonant digraphs (μπ, γη, γκ, etc.).
  • Compose captions for pictures.
  • Write simple stories.
  • Auxiliary verbs είμαι, έχω.
  • Cultural History.
  • Dance.
  • Song.

Level 5

  • Carry on conversation in Greek.
  • Dramatize to enhance speaking skills.
  • Oral compositions – create stories by looking at pictures.
  • Oral presentations.
  • Practice reading.
  • Creative Writing.
  • Verb tenses.
  • Nouns – singular, plural, 3 genders.
  • Cultural History.
  • Dance.
  • Song.

LEVEL 6

  • Carry on conversation with teachers.
  • Role play/dramatization.
  • Word study.
  • Creative writing- paragraph consisting if 4-6 sentences.
  • Dictation.
  • Verb tenses and nouns.
  • Culture and Mythology.
  • Dance.
  • Song.

Level 7 & 8

  • Carry on conversation in Greek with teachers and fellow students.
  • Oral presentations.
  • Readings from texts.
  • Word Study.
  • Keep journal – 4-6 sentences journal entries.
  • Creative writing.
  • Nouns – concrete and abstract.
  • Verbs – past, future, simple.
  • Culture and Mythology.
  • Dance.
  • Song.
